In order to tide you over until my exams finish in a couple of days and the regular stream of content resumes (Oh ho ho, I’m such a jokester), here’s a video of my jazz quintet, Shady Lewis & The Jazz Pelicans, performing at Dizzy’s Jazz Club in Melbourne last month. The piece we’re playing is “Straight Life” by the legendary trumpet player Freddie Hubbard.
My apologies for the zany trumpet solo at the start – our bass player thought it would be funny to mock Freddie’s iconic free time solo at the start of the original version with a little bit of his own trumpet “playing”.
And for those who can’t pick it, I’m the trumpet player. Yeah, I play trumpet. DON’T JUDGE ME.

That was actually pretty damned good. I am impressed.
Thanks!
Now, if I only had a flugelhorn…
Actually, a flugelhorn isn't really appropriate for that song. I just want a flugelhorn. ;p
You're in a jazz quintet?! You're such a geek.
Also, that trumpet solo made me laugh incessantly for a full 30 seconds. Well played.
I'm hoping Shady Lewis is the guitarist, because he is smooth..and shady.
Awesome jazz!
No one in the quintet is actually called Shady Lewis – it's just the name of the group. We get asked that a lot, as you can imagine.
